What is Achilles tendonitis?

2018-04-16

Some runners are familiar with the painful condition called Achilles tendonitis. It occurs when the tendon that attaches your calf muscle to your heel bone becomes inflamed. Non-insertional Achilles tendonitis is the most common type to affect runners. This article will explain the common symptoms and causes and offer some suggested methods of recovery.

Symptoms

You may have Achilles tendonitis if you notice

  • tightness in one or both calf muscles,
  • pain, tenderness, swelling or unusual warmth on the back of the heel,
  • an inability to flex your foot and ankle without discomfort or limited range of motion.

Causes

Achilles tendonitis is relatively common in active people, particularly walkers, runners and those who play sports that require sudden stops or directional changes. This is due to the strain that these activities can place on calf muscles. The stress inflames the Achilles tendon and can worsen if not treated. Exercising suddenly after an extended period of inactivity or starting an intense workout without warming up can also inflame the area. Other causes of Achilles tendonitis include wearing high heeled shoes for extended periods, wearing shoes that don’t fit well or lack support, and having pre-existing bone spurs on the heel.

Treatment

Achilles tendonitis can vary in intensity. If the pain is noticed early, an at-home strategy like Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation combined with a break from exercise may be enough to resolve the issue. Other suggestions include wearing a specialist boot to reduce pressure on the tendon, attending physiotherapist sessions and using orthotic inserts to relieve pressure.

If it is continually inflamed through further exercise or isn’t improving at home, steroid injections or even surgery may be suggested by a health care professional. These treatment options are usually only required if the injury isn’t addressed in its initial stages.

Prevention

Warm up well before attempting exercise (especially if for the first time), don’t increase endurance or speed drastically in a short space of time, wear the right shoes for the activity and make sure they are in good condition. If you wear high heels, switch to shorter heels gradually until you can wear flats, so that the tendon isn’t suddenly overstretched.

Haven’t really used insoles before but these were a good fit into my shoe and were very comfortable around your foot. Highly recommend using these if you run a lot.

    These Insoles are great.
These Insoles are great. I do a lot of walking and after getting these I noticed that I felt less fatigue at the end of the day. My one complaint is that the heel of the insole was too thick and almost didn’t allow the back of the shoes to hold as well as I would have liked. Other than that they are amazing.

    Very comfy
Found these very comfy and cushioned but did slightly supinate my feet. On one leg this felt fine on other it took a bit of getting use to. I used these at the end of an Olympic triathlon where the 10k run was very tough and the comfort was noted. Only problem being with the thickness of the insole, when I ran without socks this lifted my heel up in shoe and gave me a blister where I can normally run in my triathlon trainers without socks. I’d only use these for longer triathlons where I would definitely be wearing socks.

Good support. No jarring. Fresher feet the morning after.
Tried my new Enertor Performance Insoles over the last week. Impressed with the way it holds my foot in place. Feels well supported. No jarring on footstrike. Feet feeling better the next morning too. Using them inside my La Sportiva Helios trail shoes. Recommended.

Ran with these a few times now in my reebok trainers, I’m an ocr runner so comfort is a must as I train on trails. The high instep was strange feeling but got used to it after a while. I may need to tighten my laces as there was a bit of rubbing on the heel. But I could defo feel the extra bounce in my step. Will defo persist and improve my running.

Fantastic insole – helping me in my marathon training
Have been using Enertor for a couple of weeks now and they are incredible, very comfortable and I feel like I have a spring in my step. I had a hip injury earlier this year but since using the insoles haven’t even had a twinge in my hip and give them a lot of credit for that. As marathon training can be tough on your body, so nice to know I am protecting it as best I can with these insoles.

    A very comfortable insole
I have had 2 rounds of golf in the last 7 days, the insoles have been excellent. I normally have sore heels and calves after one round, however using these insoles those pains are not there, even after 2 rounds

    Great insoles
These insoles have really helped me. I had custom orthotics but they just don’t seem to be helping that much. The enertor insoles have helped the problem with my right knee greatly. For the first time in a long time my hips were aligned when I went to the chiropractor. I run about 60-80 miles a week and at age 61 you get a lot of aches and pains but the enertor insoles have helped reduce this. Great product. Just wondering as a gold vip member was I supposed to get a tech shirt?
