Enertor Health : Preventing Plantar Fasciitis

Preventing Plantar Fasciitis

Continuing our Enertor Health series, this post looks at the causes and prevention of Plantar Fasciitis.

The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to your toes. It’s main function is to support the arch of the feet and it acts as the natural shock absorption for your foot. If this ligament becomes irritated or you put excess stress on the tissue then you’ll feel a pain in the heel of your foot when you’re walking.

What causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Anyone who is on their feet for a lot of the day is at risk of this injury, especially if you do any type of exercise that involves putting a lot of impact on your feet, such as running, sports, even dancing.

It can also be down to your foot make-up, those that have a high arch or are flat footed are particularly susceptible to this injury as this alters the way your weight is distributed through the foot adding extra stress to the ligament. If your Achilles tendon at the back of the heel is tight, this is going to affect the Plantar Fascia also.

Even if exercise isn’t your thing, if you spend a lot of the day on your feet – particularly on a hard surface, then you’re at risk as well. Those on a shop floor all day, teachers, builders, even just running around after the kids all day can put extra pressure on the plantar fascia.

Preventing Plantar Fasciitis

As usual, number one with preventing any injury is to always make sure you are warming up and stretching properly before and after any work out. If it’s your Achilles that is causing problems, make sure to add some extra stretching in for this.

Ultimately, the one thing that can really help to prevent Plantar Fasciitis, that applies to everyone who is on their feet for most of the day for whatever reason that may be, is to take care of those feet! In an ideal world, we’d be walking or running on lovely soft surfaces all day, but as this is not possible your shoes should be providing you with cushioning at the heel and good arch support to reduce any stress to your feet. And if you are on a hard surface, flimsy shoes or going barefoot is a definite no.

If you do experience Plantar Fasciitis, get some ice on it as soon as you feel any pain. You could also use a foam roller under the heel and along the sole of the foot. If your pain persists, it is essential to see a medical professional asap.

How can Enertor insoles help with Plantar Fasciitis?

Our 18 years of Orthotics experience, combined with D30 technology has enabled us to create a unique insole that can help.

If you run or take part in any sport, our performance insoles offer 44% shock absorption – more than any other insole out there – which reduces stress on the plantar fascia and distributes the pain away from the heel. Our Performance insole’s increased arch support in combination with the heel lift will also reduce any plantar fascia tension.

Our Comfort range also offers shock absorption and the support you need to reduce any strain on the plantar fascia and provide you with a little extra comfort.

Enertor insoles are currently stocked in stores at Superdrug, and you can purchase online HERE
