Use your run to get a better job

It sounds crazy, doesn’t it? How could you turn your running training into a better career? What if your work has nothing to do with the health and fitness industry? And besides isn’t running a fairly solitary pursuit? As crazy as it sounds, running can help you get a better job. Here’s how.

Running is often a solo sport, it’s true. But increasingly, people are joining running clubs to develop social networks and discover new trails. Once or twice a week runners are gathering to take a social run together, and often retire to a cafe or pub afterward to socialise. Now, just imagine if the running club you joined was focused on bringing people together in your industry. There are established running clubs that create networks of people who work in the same field, and the benefits of socialising after sharing a run are endless.

If you need to travel for work, look up local running clubs ahead of time. You’ll meet people on the ground and start to develop friendships that could become lucrative business contacts. This can be an especially supportive environment for digital nomads – those who work remotely from anywhere in the world – where meeting colleagues face to face can be a real rarity. For those with an entrepreneurial spirit there’s the opportunity to establish a running club of your own, based around your area of interest.

One great benefit that comes with networking through a running club instead of a golf club, for example, is that running is a low cost activity that is a great leveller. There are less social restraints associated with running, and there’s something bonding about ending up as sweaty and tired as the next person at the end of a solid run.

There are plenty of stories out there about couples that have met through running clubs, less well known are the new contracts signed, job offers made and commissions landed. It’s entirely possible that you could meet your new boss on your next run.
