WHAT IS IT? The Peroneal tendons run down the back of the calf, past the outside of the ankle and then split into two. One of the tendons then goes to the base of the little toe, and the other to the outside of the big toe. The tendons pull the foot and toes downwards and allow you to turn your foot outwards. Peroneal Tendonitis is the inflammation of these tendons, causing pain around the back and outside of the foot.
WHAT CAUSES PERONEAL TENDONITIS? The tendons can become irritated through overuse, and this injury is common amongst those that play a lot of sports. Those with high arches or displaced heels (hindfoot varus) are at risk as this places additional stress on these tendons.
